Listen: to those on the Spectrum, and those who care for those on the Spectrum
Plan: Have a solid plan for when you are treating a patient on the Autism Spectrum
Act: Confidently act upon your plan
Evaluate: What went well in your plan, is there room for growth?
Lead: Teach and speak with your fellow first responders about your positive experiences

Empowering First Responders to be confident and equipped to effectively recognize and treat a patient on the Autism Spectrum.
Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a condition that affects the way an individual processes sensory information from the environment. It is a neurological condition that affects the brain's ability to interpret and respond to sensory stimuli. Individuals with SPD may have difficulty processing sensory information from one or more senses, including touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound. This disorder can have a significant impact on an individual's daily life, affecting their ability to interact with others, perform daily tasks, and participate in activities.
SPD is often diagnosed in children, but it can also affect adults. Children with SPD may have difficulty with activities such as dressing, eating, and playing with toys. They may avoid certain textures, sounds, or smells, or seek out excessive sensory stimulation. They may be hypersensitive to stimuli, leading to overreaction or avoidance, or they may be hyposensitive, leading to a lack of response or seeking out additional stimulation. Adults with SPD may experience difficulties with social interaction, emotional regulation, and sensory processing.
There are three main types of SPD: sensory modulation disorder, sensory discrimination disorder, and sensory-based motor disorder. Sensory modulation disorder affects an individual's ability to regulate their response to sensory stimuli. They may experience hypersensitivity, hyposensitivity, or a combination of both. Sensory discrimination disorder affects an individual's ability to identify and differentiate between sensory stimuli. They may have difficulty recognizing the differences between textures, sounds, or smells. Sensory-based motor disorder affects an individual's ability to use their body effectively in response to sensory stimuli. They may have difficulty with balance, coordination, and motor planning.
SPD is often linked to other conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and anxiety disorders. It is estimated that up to 80% of children with ASD have sensory processing difficulties. However, not all individuals with SPD have these conditions, and not all individuals with these conditions have SPD.
There are many treatment options available for individuals with SPD, including occupational therapy, sensory integration therapy, and speech therapy. These therapies focus on improving sensory processing, social interaction, and communication skills. In some cases, medication may be used to treat symptoms such as anxiety or attention difficulties.
In conclusion, sensory processing disorder is a neurological condition that affects an individual's ability to process sensory information from the environment. It can have a significant impact on an individual's daily life, affecting their ability to interact with others, perform daily tasks, and participate in activities. There are many treatment options available, and early intervention is crucial for improving outcomes. As awareness of SPD grows, it is important to continue to research and develop effective treatments for this disorder.
